One wall of our studio is divided into four sections: Painting, Printing, Collage, and Sculpture. This wall pretty much sums it up for us as artists. This wall is where we capture and retain ideas for the art we’d like to make.
Unlike other artists who take their inspiration from nature or from some special need to express themselves, we, instead, take our inspiration from the art other artists make. When we see well-crafted, contemporary art - paintings, printing, collage, and sculpture - we want to make it.
We have adopted the Japanese concept of “shuhari” which describes the three stages of learning that leads to mastery. “Shu” represents imitating, “ha” represents assimilation, and this leads to “ri” which is innovation. We imitate what we see, we take it all in, then, from all of it, we come up with our own way to do what we do. It’s simple and extremely satisfying.
